Composure as Dawah: Why Staying Calm is Your Best Strategy

I was sitting in my office the other day, scrolling through the noise of the modern world, when I stumbled back onto a lecture by Nouman Ali Khan about Surah Al-Muddathir. It’s a Surah I’ve read a thousand times, but this time, something clicked differently. It felt like he was describing the exact heartbeat of what I’m trying to build at Sunnah Designs: minimalist, wearable reminders that carry faith without forcing it.

He was talking about the early days of the Prophet (SAW) and the weight of the mission. But there was one specific verse that stopped me in my tracks: “And your clothing purify.” (74:4).

At first glance, you might think, "Okay, keep your clothes clean. Got it. Hygiene is part of faith." But NAK peeled back a layer that I think is the secret sauce for every Muslim trying to navigate the 21st century. It wasn't just about laundry; it was about composure. It was about not letting the "dirt" of other people’s insults, anger, or negativity stick to your character.

In a world that is increasingly loud, reactive, and often hostile, I’ve realized that our best strategy: our most powerful form of dawah: isn’t a clever comeback or a heated debate. It’s staying calm. It’s staying "clean."

The "Muddathir" Moment

Think about the context of that Surah. The Prophet (SAW) is told to "Arise and warn." He’s stepping out into an environment that is freezing cold, not just in temperature, but in reception. People are mocking him. They’re trying to get under his skin.

When NAK explained the metaphor of purifying clothes, he described it as a shield of composure. When someone throws "dirt" (insults, misconceptions, hate) at you, if you react with the same energy, that dirt sticks. You become messy. But if you maintain your composure, the dirt just slides off. You stay clean. Your "clothing": your outward persona and character: remains untainted.

That’s why I lean so heavily into the concept of Subtle Dawah. Whether you’re wearing one of our hoodies or a piece from our Abstract Collection, the goal isn't to shout. The goal is to represent a state of being that is so composed and so purposeful that people can’t help but wonder where that peace comes from. That question is the doorway.

Why Composure is the Ultimate "Minimalist Islamic Streetwear" Mindset

You might wonder, what does staying calm have to do with Minimalist Islamic streetwear?

To me, fashion is an extension of our identity. When I design a piece, I’m not just looking at thread counts or color palettes (though I’m pretty obsessed with those, too). I’m looking at how a garment makes you feel—especially when you’re heading to class, walking into the office, or hopping on a Zoom call. Does it make you feel grounded? Does it make you feel like you’re representing something bigger than yourself?

When you walk into a room wearing something that is sleek, modern, and unmistakably meaningful, you’re already making a statement. But that statement only holds weight if your character matches the aesthetic. If you’re wearing a shirt that represents the Sunnah, but you’re losing your cool at the barista or getting into toxic comment war battles, the "clothing" is no longer pure.

That’s the bridge I’m always trying to build: between faith and fashion. Between what you wear and who you are becoming. That’s where Ihsan-inspired fashion lives—not just excellence in the stitch, but excellence in the way you move through people’s stress without absorbing it.

Composure is the bridge between our faith and our fashion. It’s about being "clean" in every sense of the word.

The Power of the Quiet Response

There’s a specific kind of strength in not reacting. I like to call it the "Sunnah of the Pause."

In the research for this post, I looked into the connection between emotional intelligence and dawah. It turns out that the strongest people aren't the ones who can out-shout an opponent; they’re the ones who can control themselves when they’re angry. The Prophet (SAW) told us this directly.

When you stay composed in the face of a challenge, you’re doing something radical. You’re breaking the script. People expect a defensive reaction. When you give them gentleness, wisdom, and a calm smile instead? That’s when the real dawah happens. That’s when hearts start to soften.

This is the philosophy we bake into every Sunnah Designs product. We want our apparel to be a "gentle nudge." A conversation starter that doesn’t require a megaphone. It’s about being approachable, not confrontational.

Purifying the "Vibe"

If Verse 4 of Surah Al-Muddathir is about keeping your clothes (composure) clean, then Verse 5 is the follow-up: “And the uncleanness shun.”

NAK mentions that the word used here, Rujz, can refer to the heavy baggage of the past: the grudges, the pain, and the trauma that make us reactive. To move forward with purpose, we have to drop that weight.

I’ve found that this applies to our style, too. Why is minimalist, Minimalist Islamic streetwear so popular right now? I think it’s because we’re all craving a bit of clarity. We want to strip away the "noise" and get back to what matters. When our aesthetic is clean, it helps our mindset stay clean.

When I look at our All Collections page, I see more than just clothes. I see tools for living a more intentional life—especially for students and young professionals who want their wardrobe to feel aligned. Each piece is designed to be a "wardrobe of the soul": a physical reminder to keep your composure, drop the baggage, and stand up with Ihsan (excellence).

Subtle Dawah in the Wild

I get emails all the time from people who say, "I was wearing my Sunnah Designs shirt, and someone at the gym asked me what the calligraphy meant. We ended up talking for twenty minutes."

That’s the goal. That’s the "Muddathir" mindset in action.

The person didn't feel attacked. They didn't feel like they were being lectured. They were curious. And because our customer was composed, calm, and wearing something that sparked interest rather than defensiveness, a connection was made.

That is the power of Subtle Dawah. It’s not about winning an argument; it’s about winning a heart. And you can’t win a heart if you’re covered in the "dirt" of anger or arrogance.

How to Practice Composure Today

So, how do we actually "purify our clothing" in our daily lives? Here are a few things I’m working on:

  1. The Three-Second Rule: Before responding to a negative comment (online or offline), take three deep breaths. Ask yourself: Is this response purifying my composure, or adding dirt to it?
  2. Dress with Intention: When you put on your clothes in the morning, make an intention (niyyah). This is the heart of what I mean by Niyah intention apparel—clothes that don’t just look good, but quietly remind you to show up better. "I am dressing to represent the beauty of my faith. I will keep my character as clean as my clothes." (Check out our Inspiration page for more on this).
  3. Shun the "Rujz": If you find yourself getting reactive because of something that happened in the past, acknowledge it and let it go. You can’t "arise and warn" if you’re held down by old weights.

Final Thoughts: Standing Up in the Cold

The "weather" of the world might be rough right now. It might feel like it's getting harder and harder to be a visible Muslim. But remember the instruction given to the "Cloaked One."

Arise. Warn. Purify your clothes.

Don't let the noise of the world dictate your inner state. Your composure is your most powerful tool. It is your shield, your statement, and your dawah.

At Sunnah Designs, we’re honored to provide the "clothing" for that journey. Not just the fabric, but the philosophy. Let’s keep it clean, keep it calm, and keep moving forward with purpose.
